As I type, I am currently flying from Los Angeles to Vancouver. Thanks to Alaska Airlines, there is free wireless internet on this airplane! It’s amazing how incredible technology connects people – even at 30,000 people in the air! I’ll be visiting my good friend, Brenda, whom I met while studying abroad in Hong Kong. Then, afterwards, i’m heading down to Seattle for my cousin’s wedding in Seattle on the 4th of July!

Mario’s Peruvian & Seafood Restaurant

pollo saltado (chicken) and saltado camarones (shrimp) mixture

It's a hole-in-the-wall restaurant just off Melrose

Mario’s is located just a few miles down the road from the hip, avant-garde stores and chic restaurants along Melrose Avenue. It’s a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that serves delicious Peruvian food. My sisters and I went here on a Friday morning at 11:30 am, the time it opens everyday. Within 15 minutes, the restaurant was filled. Marios’s most popular dish is lomo saltado, which is a flavorful mixture of beef, onions, vegetables and French fries. It is served with a bed of rice. When I first saw the French fries, I was a bit apprehensive (being the health nut I am), but of course, I am always willing to try everything and anything. Well, let me tell you this: the spices and flavor of this dish are mouth-watering and absolutely delicious! You can’t help but devour this food – yes, even the French fries! We also tried the pollo saltado (chicken) and saltado camarones (shrimp). They are all quite flavorful, but I’d recommend the lomo saltado above anything else. Just one word of advice: Mario’s serves large portions, so you can easily share one dish with a friend!
